Parenteral products contained in vial package systems require a robust seal at the interface between the glass vial and the elastomeric closure to prevent contamination and product leakage. The seal is established in the manufacturing process, but must withstand a variety of handling, processing and storage conditions.
Sutures are widely used in the biomedical industry. They are used in a variety of surgical procedures to allow for wound closure and aid in tissue healing. Sutures are manufactured from various different absorbable and nonabsorbable materials, and may be single filament or braided with or without a coating. There are some challenges in testing sutures. Loading the specimen alone can pose problems as some sutures are delicate and require a low amount of force to fracture. Also, some sutures are used inside wounds and are constantly in a hydrated environment.
Surgical tubing is used in a wide variety of applications, such as drains, feeding tubes, irrigation and surgical procedures, and therefore comes in many shapes and sizes. The mechanical performance of the material used is critical, as failure could seriously endanger a patient. Tensile tests are frequently performed in product development and quality control to evaluate properties of material strength and strain at break.
Sutures are used in a variety of different surgical procedures to close wounds and aid in tissue healing. They are manufactured from a variety of different absorbable and nonabsorbable materials, and may be a single filament or braided with or without a coating. Tensile strength is a critical measure of performance during and after surgical procedures. The strength of different knotting techniques must also be evaluated. The test method must determine breaking strength and corresponding elongation and adhere to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines. Precise, consistent and reliable measures of strength and strain are essential for product development and quality control.
With continued growth in the biomaterials market, characterization of the mechanical properties of soft tissues has become a rising interest. These properties allow for the understanding of tissue function and injury mechanisms, aiding engineers and researchers in the development of bio-engineered tissues, computer assisted and remote robotic surgical methods, and injury prevention recommendations. One of the challenges in testing soft tissues arises in gripping of the specimens. Biological tissues are often times wet, slippery or delicate. Any combination of these characteristics leaves the existing test methods far below the ideal gripping solution. The ultimate goal lies in the fixation of soft biological tissues without causing premature failure or slippage.
Use of a hypodermic needle is the most direct method for administering medication. The medication is usually injected intramuscularly, where there is a rich supply of blood vessels, or intravenously, allowing the medication to be absorbed into the blood stream and begin acting almost immediately. Hypodermic needles are usually manufactured out of stainless steel and the material and design must be tested to evaluate the needle’s maximum tensile strength and yield strength. The challenge in testing these tubular devices is in gripping the specimen without causing premature failure in the grip faces.
The Instron® low-force Planar Biaxial (or cruciform) System was designed to perform mechanical testing and property analyze soft tissues and biomaterials in two axes. This test system is highly configurable, designed to give maximum flexibility to soft tissue tests.
Nitinol is a shape memory, superelastic alloy for which the biomedical industry has found extensive uses. A few examples of the numerous applications that use Nitinol include stents, dental wires, catheter guide wires, internal fracture fixation devices, biopsy forceps and others.
Instron® provides two different needle testing systems ideally suited for needles used in abdominal, fistula, vascular, intestinal, and other surgical procedures. The curved needle puncture tester is used to evaluate needle sharpness and insertion force. The needle bend tester is used to ensure that the needles are strong enough to not bend excessively during use. With their tabletop design, both systems have a small footprint and take up minimal lab space. The testing systems operate with the Instron Bluehill® Software that provides test control, data acquisition, test results, and reports.
Characterization of the mechanical properties of soft tissue used in medical applications is at the forefront of biomedical engineering, tissue engineering and materials testing in both industry and academia. The mechanical characteristics of living tissue are required in order to accurately create bioengineered replacement tissues and for medical diagnostic purposes.
A key concern for dental restorative materials and adhesives is their tensile and shear bond strength to the tooth enamel. However, alignment errors associated with angularity and concentricity of the specimen can make pure tensile and shear testing difficult. In the tensile bond strength test, load is applied perpendicular to the bond line inducing pure tensile loads. However, this can be quite difficult as alignment errors can induce bending stresses which results in premature failure and consequently yielding incorrect low results The ISO 11405 standard seeks to address this problem with fixtures that ensure specimen alignment during test set up. The Instron BioPuls™ shear and tensile strength test fixtures meet and exceed the ISO requirements by addressing alignment of the specimen during preparation, as well as preventing loss of alignment during testing. The specimen preparation accessory follows the ISO recommendations for set up of the specimen prior to test. It comes with a complete set of tools including cups and studs for multiple test specimens.
A pharmaceutical manufacturer wanted to investigate the forces necessary to eject medications from various types of syringes and needles.
The BioPuls submersible pneumatic side action grips and temperature-controlled bath with pneumatic lifting and lowering mechanism is the ideal testing solution for a wide variety of biomedical testing applications.
Hydrogels are widely used in the biomedical industry for applications such as coatings for catheters, contact lenses, scaffolds, and wound dressings because these materials have the ability to absorb fluids and swell up to 2000 times their original size. Hydrogels are often implanted into the body to provide medical benefits and therefore must be tested in a simulated environment.
Medical adhesives are widely used in the biomedical industry for applications such as bandages, secondary dressings, and wound closure. The adhesive strength of these products must be clearly defined before put to use in a clinical setting. If the adhesive is not strong enough, the product may lead to infection or poor healing. If the adhesive is too strong, the underlying tissue may become damaged upon removal.
Nitinol is a shape memory, superelastic alloy for which the biomedical industry has found extensive uses. A few examples of the numerous applications that use Nitinol include stents, dental wires, catheter guide wires, internal fracture fixation devices, biopsy forceps and others. The major challenge in testing this material is accurate strain measurements. The Instron® Advanced Video Extensometer (AVE) is a solution which allows for strain measurement of Nitinol wire in cyclic loading and to failure.
Extensometers are often used to accurately measure the deformation of a material under mechanical loading. Due to the fragile nature of biological soft tissues, such as fascia, skin, and intestinal lining, a non-contacting extensometer is the ideal solution for measuring tensile strain in these specimens. The AVE uses a high-resolution digital camera and advanced real-time image processing to make precise axial and transverse (optional) strain measurements on test specimens. Because these tissue specimens are soft, moist, and vary in color, the challenge in acquiring strain data lies in the marking technique. The purpose of this study was to investigate different AVE marking techniques for biological tissues.
The Instron® Testmaster Automation System, configured to perform unattended tensile testing of biomedical cord and yarn specimens, provides an ideal solution for high-volume tests of medical sutures. Designed to accommodate specimens of varying lengths and thicknesses, the system utilizes barcode labels to pass specimen information and testing specifications to the Testmaster2 Automation Control Software. A typical automated test sequence includes the following steps: The robot retrieves a batch separator with a barcode label affixed from a rack, scans the barcode, and downloads the specimen and testing information to the Testmaster2 Automation Control Software. The separator is then discarded into a bin and a specimen is retrieved from the racks and placed into the tensile frame and tested. After the test, the specimen is removed via a specimen removal device at the back of the frame, which utilizes a low-noise, industrial vacuum to aid in full removal of the tested sutures from the grips area. The robot then inserts the next specimen to be tested.
The customer has delivered three different samples of medical packaging that were prepared into 1 inch wide specimens for testing. The seal strength of the packaging was to be evaluated in a 180 degree peel test as described by ASTM F 88 - Standard Test Method for Seal Strength of Flexible Barrier Materials.
Millions of people use contact lenses on a daily basis, making them one of the most widely used medical devices in the world. Preferred over eyeglasses, they are used for a variety of eye correction prescription and are manufactured in an array of forms ranging from hard to soft lenses. When testing lenses, loading the specimen into the grips can pose many problems: the soft lens material is slippery and delicate fracturs at very low forces; and the test specimens are extremely small, providing a limited amount of gripping surface. Contact lenses must also be tested in an environment that best simulates physiological conditions; ambient testing results in the drying out and cracking of the material.
Use caution when comparing the values of a 180 degree peel adhesion test without understanding the test instrument’s bandwidth and data acquisition settings.

ASTM D 4255 describes both 2 Rail and 3 rail methods of determining the in-plane shear strength of a composite laminate panel. In the 2 Rail test (Method A) a laminate panel specimen is clamped between loading plates and yokes and then subject to shear loading. Measurement of shear strain requires the use of strain gauges on the specimen.
ASTM C 273 describes a method of determining the shear strength of a sandwich core panel. The test the specimen is bonded to thick loading plate blocks and is subject to shear loading applied via the blocks.
The Iosipescu shear test is used to determine the shear properties of composite materials. Depending on the orientation of the specimen relative to the coordinate system of the material (i.e. the fi ber lay-up either in-plane or interlaminar shear properties can be determined). These shear properties can include: shear modulus of elasticity, transition strain, and ultimate shear stress and strain.
Interlaminar shear testing is a simple test on, easy to prepare, polymer composite specimens that gives a measure of the strength of the bond between fibers and matrix. Another common test for polymer composites is fl exure testing. The Instron® Modular Flexural and Interlaminar Shear Strength (ILSS) bend fi xture system, with a range of interchangeable anvils, is suitable for testing to a number of international standards, including ASTM D2344, D790, EN 2562, EN 2563, ISO 14125, and ISO 14130.
The “Airbus CAI” fi xture is used to test the impact resistance of carbon and other fi ber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite laminates. These materials are prone to great reduction in compressive strength even when the impact load is insuffi cient to cause visible damage. The post-impact compression test is used widely to assess the relative performance of different composite laminates with different fi ber matrix combinations. In the fi rst part of the test the laminates are subjected to low-velocity impact loading simulating tool drops and fl ying debris. Specimens then undergo a compression after impact(CAI) test on an electromechanical or servohydraulic testing machine.
ASTM D 1781 describes a method of measuring the strength of the adhesive bond between the core and the facing of a honeycombcore panel. The Instron® climbing drum peel fixtures meet the requirements of ASTM D 1781. Designed with a standard fitting, they can be used on any standard Instron machine. The fixtures are robust and durable, and can be used inside an environmental chamber over a wide temperature range.
The anti-buckling fixture was originally designed for rigid plastics per ASTM D 695, reinforced plastics per ASTM D 3846. It was also extended and used for high-modulus composites. Boeing then adapted the fixture so that it would be self supported between two platens to ensure consistent perpendicularity of the fixture. The SACMA standard followed the Boeing design with an added alternative support fixture with a cutout, which would allow bonded strain gages to be used at the center of the specimen for a more precise strain measurement.
Compression testing of composites without anti-buckling guide plates, is often preferred as the free unsupported length is more representative of true compression behavior. This method relies on the accuracy of the alignment between the upper fixture and the lower fixture while introducing the compression load. In addition, the natural failure process of the specimen will induce high lateral forces that must be resisted to ensure that forces remain in true compression. Therefore, the principle behind the IITRI, Wyoming Modified Celanese and Combined Loading Compression fixtures is essentially the same. Where they are different, is the way the compression load is being introduced – either by shear transfer from jaw faces to specimen, or a combination of shear and end loading. This is the primary difference with the CLC fixture where the shear load component is from the tightening of the screws which is combined with end loads introduced directly. The IITRI and Celanese rely on the self tightening effect from the wedge jaw faces. The Celanese fixture also allows for preloading the jaw faces by manual screws when the specimen is being installed, while the IITRI also includes end bars that could be used to introduce end loads to the specimen. In terms of usability, the IITRI allows the largest specimens, up to 38 mm wide, but is the heaviest of the fixtures. The CLC is conceptually the simplest but care must be exercised to ensure the specimen is properly located and improper or uneven tightening of the clamping screws can affect results. The Celanese is a neat compact fixture but is limited to only 12.7 mm (0.5 in.) wide specimens.
ASTM C 297 describes a method of determining the bond strength between the facing and core of a sandwich core panel or the strength of the core itself, if the bond strength between the facing and the core is suffi ciently strong. The specimen is bonded to thick loading blocks and then subject to tensile loading applied via the blocks.
The MFX 500 is a high-resolution, automatic contacting extensometer that may be used to measure modulus, offset yields, and plastic (non-proportional) elongation to failure for many types of specimens. Automatic control is facilitated using Bluehill® 2 Software, and allows the operator to open and close the arms, set the reference arm position, along with the gauge length.
Screw side-action grips provide a very simple and efficient method for holding test specimens in a wide range of applications. The dual - acting design of 2710-100 series grips means that jaw faces can be adjusted to accommodate different specimen thicknesses. This ensures that the line of tensile force remains concentric with the grip body. They can be equipped with a selection of interchangeable grip jaw faces in various sizes and choice of surfaces including smooth ground, rubber-coated and serrated. Line contact and special coated faces are also available. The unique ‘snap-on’ jaw face attachment makes changing faces extremely quick and simple.

Proper calibration of your test system is the first step in ensuring that your lab is producing high quality data and valid results. Current issues related to calibration in materials testing labs include changes to national and international standards, accreditation to ISO 17025, and uncertainty of measurement. We will discuss recent changes to force, strain, and hardness standards, the release of a new ASTM standard for displacement calibration, and other potential new standards. Since not everyone is really sure what accreditation is all about, we will give an introductory review of why accreditation has value, who performs the accreditation, and how ILAC fits into the picture. ISO 17025 requires uncertainty of measurement analyses from testing laboratories. We will give an example of how the uncertainty of calibration can affect the total uncertainty of the test results.

The recently issued ASTM standard, F2516-05: Standard Test Method for Tension Testing of Nickel-Titanium Superelastic Materials, suggests that strain measurement for nitinol specimens can be determined by machine crosshead motion, a clip-on extensometer or a video extensometer. The purpose of this study was to compare the three different methods for testing nitinol tubing. Stress-strain results reveal that the video extensometer and the clip-on extensometer provide for comparable results. However, the non-contacting video extensometer may eliminate slipping and premature failure that are common sources of error with the clip-on extensometer.

Accurate and repeatable results are the goal for any good testing program. Unique characteristics of springs, most notably coil compression springs, can cause errors that make this goal difficult to achieve. You will learn about factors such as extraneous forces, frame deflection and others that cause errors, as well as how to minimize their affects on your load testing results. In addition, you will learn about some advanced analysis techniques some of our customers are using to differentiate their products in the market. These techniques are made possible by analyzing the entire spring characteristic curve (load vs. height) to determine multi-rate spring transition points (knees), spring non-linearity and others.

Steel welded wire fabric, made from either cold-worked deformed wire or a combination of deformed and non-deformed wires, is often used in concrete reinforcement. In addition to the tensile strength and bend strength of the welds that support the fabric, the shear strength of the longitudinal and transverse wires is also important to characterize.
The manufacturer of a cleaning solution that is packaged and delivered for use in the food industry has received customer complaints that the solution is leaking at some point during shipment. It is possible that the adhesive or the process used to seal the package is insufficient for preventing leakage of the solution over time. A comparison of the strength of the packaging material compared to the strength of the seal through a series of peel tests may provide insight into the problem.
The Advanced Video Extensometer (AVE) has the ability to measure axial and transverse strain without contacting the specimen. Such non-contacting strain measurement is advantageous for testing thin and delicate specimens. The purpose of this test was to evaluate the AVE as a tool for calculating Poisson's Ratio in strips of polymer membranes in accorance with ASTM D 882.
A manufacturer of conveyer belt material was experiencing problems when trying to test their product in tension. The conveyer belt samples either slipped out of the jaw faces due to the inherent lubricity of the material or the test resulted with a jaw break. Samples were sent in to determine if there was a configuration available to resolve this issue.
Sheet metal tensile testing applications require the use of an extensometer to comply with relevant ASTM and ISO testing standards accuracy requirements. In some cases, the thickness of the specimens may be too thin for use with a traditional clip-on extensometer. Developments in the technology of extensometry offer metals testing customers other options, such as the Instron® Advanced Video Extensometer (AVE) for testing aluminum specimens in tension.
A manufacturer of consumer breath freshening strips uses the In-SpecTM 2200 electromechanical system to determine the tensile strength and elongation ofvtheir products. These results provide quality assurance in manufacturing and production, ensuring customer satisfaction.
Sheet metal testing applications require calculations such as yield strength, yield point elongation, ultimate tensile strength, plastic strain ratio ('r' value)and the strain hardening exponent ('n' value). These calculations place a high physical demand on traditional contacting extensometers. The purpose of this testing was to evaluate the Advanced Video Extensometer (AVE) for performing non-contacting strain measurement on steel specimens.
A manufacturer of ammunition pellets used in a variety of firearms uses an Instron® electromechanical test system to evaluate the compressive strength of the pellets and the type of deformation they exhibit under load. Further, the shelf life of these pellets must also be quantified in order to guarantee performance over time.
Characterization of the mechanical properties of materials used in space flight is at the forefront of research and development activities for NASA. One such test required the calculation of Poisson's Ratio, a measure of a material's compressibility, on foam material used in the construction of space shuttles in accordance with ASTM D 1623, "Standard test method for tensile and tensile adhesion properties of rigid cellular materials".
Evaluation of a pillow's comfort or firmness has historically relied on surveys completed by employees or customers' feedback. In an attempt to quantify these measures of comfort, one pillow manufacturer delivered several pillow specimens to Instron® to explore testing configurations that could produce repeatable data to correlate with that generated from the customer and employee surveys.
A manufacturer of composite materials uses an Instron® electromechanical testing system and 3-point bend fixture to determine the flexural modulus, flexural strength and flexural strain of their composite bars. The test was conducted according to the ASTM D 790, "Standard Test Method for Flexural Properties of Unreinforced and Reinforced Plastics and Electrical Insulating Materials".
There are two common challenges in conducting high-speed, low-force testing. The first challenge is overcoming the inertial force resulting from acceleration of the upper grip and the crosshead. The second challenge is to reduce the amplitude of the resonant frequency resulting from the combination of a high rate of crosshead extension and the grips and load cell used. The purpose of this testing was to isolate these issues and provide a solution for minimizing their effects.
A manufacturer of copy paper needs to investigate the cause of copy machine failure as a result of frequent paper jams. A Coefficient of Friction (COF) test was recommended to measure the static and kinetic coefficients of friction between two sheets of paper. Because no specific testing standard outlines a method for this type of material, ASTM D 1894 "Standard Test Method for Static and Kinetic Coefficient of Friction of Plastic Film and Sheeting" was followed.
Four different fabric samples were tested using a ball burst fixture in accordance with ASTM D 6797 to measure the burst strength of each and compare values between samples. The test was used to investigate the effect of different chemical treatments on the mechanical properties of the fabric.
Tensile testing of thin plastic sheeting in accordance with ASTM D 882 is a common testing requirement for many Instron customers. Gripping of these delicate specimens is the prevalent challenge in most tests. The gripping technique must prevent slipping of the material at high loads but not tear into the material and cause premature specimen failure.
A manufacturer of coated fabrics is interested in evaluating the effect of a particular coating on the flexural properties of fabric material. Four different coated fabric samples were delivered to the Instron® demonstration laboratory for evaluation. All testing was conducted in accordance with ASTM D 790.

Piston-compressed air and oil dampers are used in many applications, such as on automobile doors and in engines. The testing challenge in this application is overcoming the inertia created by the test frame crosshead as it is compressed to the hold points.
This report summarizes the test configuration recommended for evaluating the forces required to eject fluid from a syringe. It is important that the material and design of both the syringe and the needle be tested, as both will have an effect on the overall forces required of the end-user. The challenge in testing these tubular specimens is to create a platform in which the syringe can be placed and remain stable while a compressive force is administered on the plunger from above to mimic normal use of the device.

Stainless steel tubing (or any other variety of rigid metallic tubing) can be difficult to test in tension for two reasons. Standard methods of gripping will cause the tubing to collapse and lead to pre-mature failure of the specimen. Strain measurement is also usually not possible with traditional clip-on extensometers because the knife-edges lead to high stress concentrations and consequently failure of the thin specimen wall. The purpose of this testing was to recommend a gripping solution and evaluate the use of the Advanced Video Extensometer (AVE) for accurate, non-contacting strain measurement.
